Steven trained as a molecular immunologist before joining the Sanger Institute in 1993 as one of the first 5 scientists on the human Genome project. He transferred into a university spin-out which grew to become a global PLC taking on a variety of technical roles in product development (senior scientist, project lead & project management) and transitioned into commerce (product management, sales, distributor management, business planning, IP strategy, business manager).
In 2008, Steven took on a strategic role in Scottish economic development, identifying what would become known as digital health as a critical emerging sector, lobbying successfully at national level for its inclusion in the national life since strategy through the industry advisory board chaired by Nicola Sturgeon (then deputy First Minister of Scotland).
In 2013, Steven co-founded the consultancy and networking organisation D Health through which he has worked with leading digital health companies from Europe and the US. Following a buy-out in 2019, he now owns the company. He is an experienced consultant with a deep understanding of digital health’s unusual dynamics and has undertaken projects in consumer genomics, virtual primary care, diabetic medical devices, digital biomarkers, digital therapeutics, retail pharmacy, data transfer, outsourced services, weight management, cyber security, consumer products, data modelling, medical tourism and digital transformation.
In 20017, Steven founded the corporate working group in digital health; a forum for executives from multinationals to explore the diverse aspects of digital health, drawing executives from over 50 international companies from pharma, insurance, retail, telecoms, technology, etc.
In recent years, he has become an assessor for a number of agencies involved in awarding grant funding to SMEs, is a mentor for EIT (European Institute for Technology) during the European digital health semi-final competition and featured as a jury member in the 2017 finals.
In reaction to the Covid crisis, Steven is in the process of launching a new venture in Q4 2020.
